The Sam Cary Scholarship Endowment Fund is a 501(c)(3) organization created in 1986 after the Sam Cary Bar Association hosted the National Bar Association’s national convention in Denver.  The original seven members of the Board of Directors are members of the Sam Cary Bar Association who have reached the pinnacle of the profession:

• Hon. Robert L. "Beau" Patterson, Denver County Court (retired)

• Barbara J. Kelley, Executive Director of the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (retired)

• J. Wallace Wortham, Denver City Attorney (retired)

• W. Harold "Sonny" Flowers, former President of Sam Cary Bar Association and Colorado Trial Lawyers Association (deceased)

• Barbara Fort Jones, Partner at Sherman & Howard (deceased)

• Hon. Gary M. Jackson, Denver County Court, Founding Member of the Sam Cary Bar Association and former Partner of DiManna & Jackson (retired)

Today, the Endowment Fund Committee is chaired by the Honorable Don Toussaint. The primary purpose of the Endowment Fund is to award scholarships on an annual basis to African American students at the University of Colorado and University of Denver Schools of Law.  The Sam Cary Bar Association was one of the first Black bar associations in the country to establish a 501(c)(3) organization and award scholarships.  Since the inception of the Sam Cary Scholarship Endowment Fund, we have awarded over $325,000.00 in scholarships to CU and DU students.  Our corpus is achieved by the donations from our members, friends of Sam Cary, and the proceeds from our annual Gala (traditionally hosted in the fall), and the annual contributions of our board members.
